Delsea's Nadia Berardelli is The South Jersey Times Field Hockey Player of the Year, 2017SJPlyrOfTheYr

For one, the returning South Jersey Times Player of the Year was going to draw attention everywhere she went on the field this season. Whether she had the ball on her stick or not, the Delsea senior standout was going to draw double and triple teams. Secondly, Berardelli had to grow used to a new position, as a right forward, away from her spot as a junior in the center of the field, where she scored a single-season school record 38 goals. And Berardelli still scored.

Dawn Lombardi recorded a hat trick when second-seeded Delsea, No. 16 in the NJ.com Top 20, defeated seventh-seeded Cumberland, 9-0, in the quarterfinal round of the South Jersey, Group 2 tournament in Franklinville.

Another Delsea Record Falls!

Delsea's field hockey goalie Hailey Abbotthaileyabbottrecord broke the all time record for the most shut outs in one season. She beat the old record holder, Kelsey DiBenedetto, who had 14 shut outs in a season. The game game against Shalick was the one where she was going to break the record if she saved every everything, and she did. There are still two more games left for Hailey to extend her record even farther.

Hailey Abbott recorded her 16th shutout of the season, breaking her own school record of 15, as Delsea, No. 16 in the NJ.com Top 20, defeated Woodstown, 8-0, in Franklinville. Hannah Hartwell had four goals and two assists while Sierra Giuliano had two goals and two assists for Delsea, which had a total of 27 shots and scored six goals in the second half. Nadia Berardelli had one goal and two assists while Allie Tenenberg netted one goal. Cara Kientz and Dawn Lombardi added one assist apiece.

When Nadia Berardelli sets her focus on something, the objectives soon follow. So when the Delsea senior wing planned on scoring her 100th career goal this season — it was just a matter of time before it happened. Last Tuesday, it did. Berardelli notched her 100th, 101st and 102nd career goals in a 7-0 victory over Triton. Then, she added career goals 103 and 104 in a 5-1 win over Maple Shade last Thursday.

Sunday Conversation with Delsea Field Hockey Star Nadia Berardelli

nadiaberarHere is our Sunday conversation with Delsea senior field hockey player Nadia Berardelli. Berardelli led the Delsea field hockey team to an 10-0 start through Friday. The right wing generated 15 goals and 10 assists as the Crusaders outscored opponents by a aggregate total of 59-2. As a junior, Berardelli set the school single-season record with 38 goals. She also is Delsea’s all-time leading scorer with 86 and counting. Berardelli spoke the other night with the Inquirer’s Phil Anastasia.

Delsea Field Hockey Twins, Hailey and Pam Abbott, Are Inseparable

haileypamThey’re inseparable. They’ve been that way since birth -- literally. Chances are, if you saw Hailey Abbott her twin sister, Pam, was around, too. Most of those occasions centered on field hockey. Delsea coach Meg Unger can remember the Abbott twins watching Crusaders’ games for over a decade, two little girls sitting side-by-side mesmerized by everything their older sister Heather did.

The Crusaders have done everything, except for close out the NJSIAA South Jersey Group 2 championship.
